These are the skills you use in combat, specifically weapons and combat maneuvers. You can use some general skills (or social skills) in combat, but these are the combat focused skills.
One can also add Armor Proficiency into this category as well. The Armor skills are going to be purely optional for settings where being able to move in specific types of armor is important, however for the base game I just assume if you have the armor, you’ve taken the time to get use to performing certain tasks, though heavier or more restricting armor will impose negatives.
I have weapon skills grouped into two ways, based on what settings I might use: a Simple method, using Light and Heavy (divided by Ranged and Melee), or complex, such as Axes, Blades, Pistols, Rifles, Etc. Below is an example of the subgroups, and some abilities or careers may have the character proficient in the individual weapon groups, and increasing individual weapon groups would show that training in the specifics of a skill, though improving one does not improve another group.
| Melee Groups | Ranged Groups |
| Exotics | Exotics |
| Axes | Pistols |
| Blades | Rifles |
| Blunt | Shotguns |
| Heavy/Light of the Above | Bows |
| Polearms | Crossbows |
| Staves | Heavy Weapons (rockets or grenade launchers) |
You can also break down Brawling and Martial Arts into individual types, however I only recommend doing so if your campaign’s focus is in hand-to-hand combat.
Combat Skills
Melee (and sub groups) (STR)
Melee with the subtypes fall under combat and equipment rules, but in general, those who have training with these weapons can perform additional things, including various combat maneuvers and tactics.
Generally there are two types of Melee weapons: Heavy and Light
Brawling/Martial Arts (STR)
A type of combat, it falls under the melee combat rules. However, Martial Arts can cover several combat maneuvers.
Ranged (subgroups) (DEX)
Ranged weapons, like melee, cover the basics of how to use the weapon in training. With proper training you can perform various combat maneuvers, and use abilities to compliment this skill training.
Like Melee, the sub-categories for Ranged are Light, Medium, Heavy, and Gunnery.
Tactics (WIL)
Warfare, combat maneuvers, tactics covers how well a fighter is. Tactics is vital for performing combat maneuvers against opponents, such as grappling, tripping, dirty tricks, bull rush, disarm, overrun, feinting, and so on. Tactics is also used to plan a large battle, leading an army, and strategic warfare.
